The name Congo conjures up a journey into the heart of Africa itself. The River Congo is not totally navigable due to rapids, but it is still a major trading and transportation artery for the Republic of Congo and neighbouring countries. It was the time of the great exploration trips in Africa and the subsequent seizure of the unexplored territory by the European powers.

In the wake of the decision that divided central Africa, Father Verbist's community was charged with the evangelization of the enormously huge and unexplored "Congo Free State". Congo has become synonymous with crisis. It is, of course, very important that the world knows about what has been going on here. People in foreign countries need to know that every day hundreds of thousands of people are getting poorer. But some other things need to be made known too.
